The Work Begins

A Private Investigator at the Beach
A Familiar Request
Doc Sportello works as a private investigator whose cases often involve missing people, money, and complicated relationships. Shasta's request about Mickey gives him an assignment that feels personal before it becomes dangerous.
Informal Methods
Doc relies on phone calls, old acquaintances, intuition, and luck rather than official authority. His style suits the unstable world around Gordita Beach but leaves him exposed when the case attracts police and federal attention.
Police Custody

A Suspect by Circumstance
The Arrest
Bigfoot finds Doc unconscious at the raid site beside Glen's body. Since Doc had asked after Glen earlier, the police treat his presence as evidence of possible involvement.
Release as Strategy
Bigfoot eventually releases Doc partly to draw the actual perpetrators into view. Doc is no longer simply an investigator; he is also being used as bait by the same police force he distrusts.
Official Offers

Pressure to Inform
Federal Interest
Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation question Doc about Tariq and his contacts. Bigfoot also offers him money to become an informant, presenting cooperation as both practical and inevitable.
Refusal and Distrust
Doc declines to report on his client and refuses Bigfoot's offer. His choices protect some confidences but also leave him without institutional support as multiple agencies watch his movements.
A Dangerous Exchange

Intervention Without Authority
The Conflict Peaks
Puck drugs and imprisons Doc after Doc reaches Adrian Prussia. Doc escapes, fights both men, and survives by improvisation rather than any reliable legal safeguard.
A Bargain with the Powerful
Bigfoot takes heroin from the scene and leaves Doc to manage the consequences. Doc later uses the drug to negotiate protection for Coy and others, demonstrating the compromises required when official channels cannot be trusted.
The Fogbound Drive

Work Without an Answer
A Temporary Community
Doc drives through dense fog in a line of strangers following one another's taillights. For a brief time, the convoy offers practical help without payment or formal authority.
An Open Ending
The road remains obscured, and Doc does not know who is ahead or how far the fog extends. His final journey echoes his investigation: movement continues, but certainty and closure remain out of reach.
